Eric Clapton - Wonderful tonight - v1.0

Video: https://youtu.be/GzEYNxuI38U

Recorded & produced: Jan, Apr-May 2022

This started as a vocals practice for soft and even mixed voice. Then it became a recording on https://www.youcansingbetter.org/. The drums were already a practice piece and I was familiar with the lead guitar's tab. All these convinced me to record a cover.

Vocals

Soft singing is the key for this song. I tried keeping the timbre uniform as I increased the pitch. I got help with backing vocals.

Lead guitar

I used to play the lead in Rocksmith and frankly it's repetitive and not difficult to learn. There are a few additional riffs but overall it was fairly straightforward performance. In hindsight the tone is a bit too harsh and with too much gain; it should have had a warmer sound.

Rhythm guitars

The first rhythm guitar was an arpeggio, sounded pretty reasonable yet it wasn't filling up the stereo space. I realized that I need a second rhythm track. I had upcoming travel and decided to try out guitar recording on the trip. After practicing in the previous evening, one morning I woke up early and I managed to record a useable rhythm track with my travel guitar (see the top right box).

Bass

I found a convincing bass tab that sounded close to the original performance and I just followed it.

Drums

I ended up learning this song while practicing playing the double stick 16th of a note rhythm on the hihat. Keeping the rhythm steady wasn't easy though. It took a few takes and some MIDI note corrections to reach an acceptable quality.

Keyboard - organ

A straightforward electric organ pad gives the original a melancholic atmosphere. I used the expression pedal to add vibrato to certain parts.

Video recording

For the travel guitar part I used a more compact Sony a7c with a native zoom lens.
